10 Scientifically Proven Ways To Be More Attractive

As men, we all want to be more attractive.

But the big question is – how do we do this?

What do women actually find attractive?

10 ways to be more attractive

Can you trust a woman to TELL you what she finds attractive – or is she just being nice?

These questions have plagued men since the beginning of time…

But luckily for us, there is research on this.

In a 2011 study, scientists from the University of British Columbia analyzed which facial expressions are attractive to the opposite sex.

In this study, the expressions analyzed were:

  • Pride (a small smile, head tilted slightly up, expanded chest, and arms raised above the head with hands in fists)
  • Happiness (a broad smile with open mouth and raised cheeks)
  • Shame (head down, eyes down, and slightly narrowed chest and posture)
  • Neutrality (no expression)

They found that the most attractive expression on a man was pride, and the least attractive was happiness.

Even weirder, an expression of shame was found to be more attractive than a neutral expression.

And that’s not the only weird science on attraction…

Read on for 10 scientifically-backed ways to make the ladies sit up and take notice.

1. Put Away Your Cell Phone (Keep Your Chin Up!)

Keeping your chin up makes your jaw look stronger – which people perceive as masculine, according to a 2011 study in the journal ‘Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London’.

Researchers in this study theorized that keeping your chin up is attractive because it’s perceived as showing high testosterone.

Testosterone drives the development of secondary sex characteristics and also promotes a healthy immune system. In nature, health and vitality trump all in the search for a mate.

A 2016 study at Princeton University also showed that keeping your chin up makes you appear confident and assertive. These are traits correlated with attractiveness – with the added bonus of making you look a bit slimmer.

2. Get Buff (But Only If You Want A Fling)

In a 2007 study from the University of California, Los Angeles – shirtless men were rated as long and short-term partners by a study group of 286 women.

Researchers found that these women were more likely to want short-term relationships with the guys who had big muscles.

If this guy’s looking for a fling, he’s in luck… but what if he’s looking for a wife?

But here’s the interesting thing. The women looking for long-term relationships preferred less muscular men.

The takeaway? Gym rats might get the girl – but they may not necessarily keep her.

3. Speak In Monotone?

People with appealing voices are perceived as having more attractive faces – and may also be having more sex.

Men who speak with fewer ups and downs in pitch (more monotone) and use more dominant language also tend to have more sexual partners, according to a 2010 study.

Women tend to prefer deeper voices because of the unconscious promise of more testosterone.

However, a study from McMaster University in Canada found that deep voices are only really preferred when women are looking for a short-term relationship.

This may be because men with more testosterone are more likely to cheat.

4. Practice Mindfulness

Australian researchers recently found that women are more attracted to mindful men.

Before a speed dating session, 91 students were asked to fill out a mindfulness questionnaire in which they indicated how much they agreed with statements like:

• “I perceive my feelings and emotions without having to react to them.”

• “I notice changes in my body, such as whether my breathing slows down or speeds up.”

• “I’m good at finding the words to describe my feelings.”

Participants rated how “sexy” they found their partner and how much they’d like to date that person.

It was found that men were generally more drawn to physically attractive women (independent coders had rated the students’ attractiveness beforehand).

But women were generally more attracted to mindful men. So healthy introspection isn’t just good for you – it’s good for your love life too.

5. To Look Good: Smell Good

In a 2009 study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science, researchers told two groups of men to try out a new deodorant.

One group got a genuine, scented deodorant. The other got a placebo – a fake deodorant that did nothing for their BO.

Over the next few days, the men who used the scented spray reported higher self-confidence and they felt more attractive.

Pictured: a man making himself better-looking.

Now here’s the real kicker: women rated the good-smelling men as better-looking than their stinky counterparts.

Hardly surprising, is it?

But this was ON VIDEO. That’s right – the women didn’t actually smell the men in person. The effects of believing you smell good are so powerful, your confidence comes through even to those who aren’t picking up your scent.

6. Wear Sunglasses

Vanessa Brown of Nottingham Trent University in the UK set out to answer the question, “why does everyone look hotter in sunglasses?”

She found a number of factors.

First of all, sunglasses create an air of mystery by hiding the expression of your eyes and preventing eye contact. And mystery plays an important role in attraction – especially for women.

Sunglasses also improve your facial symmetry by obscuring any slight anomalies around your eyes. Symmetry is another major factor in the perception of physical beauty.

Finally, sunglasses exploit the pure power of association. Celebrities wear them, so they have a cultural association with success and sex appeal.

7. Surround Yourself With Attractive Friends

One study from the University of California at San Diego asked participants to rate the attractiveness of people in solo vs group pictures – and people in groups fared significantly better.

What’s going on there?

Humans tend to process faces in groups, so we see the whole group as attractive or unattractive.

If you surround yourself with attractive people, you will look more attractive.

If you’re surrounded by people enjoying themselves and having a great time, you’re giving the impression that you’re great to be around and people want your attention.

8. Show Kindness

One of the best-documented findings in psychology is the halo effect, a bias where you unconsciously take one aspect of somebody as a sign of their overall character.

halo effect

Being well-dressed gives you the “halo effect”.

A 2014 Chinese study made a startling discovery: Images of men described with positive personality traits – such as kindness and integrity – appear more PHYSICALLY attractive to women.

In other words, to look more attractive: show kindness.

Easy ways to do this include giving compliments and being a good listener.

Meanwhile, a 2013 British study found that women find men more appealing when they do volunteer work. It shows you have the time and resources to share, and that you’re conscientious. You’re a man that they can depend on.

9. Stand Straight Up – Open Body Language

A 2016 study — from researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, Stanford University, the University of Texas at Austin, and Northwestern University — suggests that people who display expansive body language are more attractive.

Expansive body language means taking up plenty of space and keeping your arms and legs open rather than closed.

These guys are not looking very dateable.

Participants saw people with crossed arms or hunched shoulders as less dateable. The same person standing tall with open arms appeared more dateable.

The difference was slightly more pronounced for women selecting men. So guys – straighten up.

10. Grow Stubble

In a 2013 study from the University of New South Wales, women rated images of men in four conditions: clean-shaven, light stubble, heavy stubble, or full beard.

They found that “facial hair correlates not only with maturity and masculinity but also with dominance and aggression.”

stubble more attractive

The highest-rated images came from the “heavy stubble” category – in other words, men who clearly have the ability to grow a beard, but haven’t.

This seems to be the balance that will convey maturity and masculinity without overdoing the dominance and aggression.

Bonus Tip 1: Signal Status

A 2010 study from the University of Wales Institute found that people perceived men pictured with a Silver Bentley Continental GT as way more attractive than those pictured with a Red Ford Fiesta ST.

And in a 2014 study from Cardiff Metropolitan University, people rated men pictured in a luxury apartment as more attractive than those in a control group. The message?

The idea of luxury and success will make you more attractive.

On the flip side, celebrities and royals aren’t necessarily any prettier than you – they just have status on their side. Status is very attractive.

Bonus Tip 2: Shave Your Head

An extreme method but bear with me… a 2012 study in the journal ‘Social Psychological and Personality Science’ had people rate photos of men with hair and with digitally shaved heads.

Participants rated the bald men as being:

  • 13% more dominant
  • 6% more confident
  • 10% more masculine
  • About an inch taller
  • 13% stronger
  • Nearly four years older

These effects still showed up when the experimenters used no photos, just verbal descriptions.

Men with thinning hair fared worse than either bald men or men with a full head of hair.

So if you’ve got a bald spot, your best bet may be to shave your whole head.
